On Tuesday 21 March and Wednesday 22 March, law firm VANEPS organized a postgraduate course in St. Maarten in collaboration with the Center for Postgraduate Legal Education of Radboud University Nijmegen. During two afternoons, the 25 attorneys, lawyers and notaries in attendance were brought up to speed about current issues within property law.

The course was given by prof. dr. Bas Kortmann and prof. Frank Kunneman (LLM). Bas Kortmann has been a professor of civil law at Radboud University Nijmegen since 1984. For seven years he also acted as the president of this university. Frank Kunneman is a partner at VANEPS and a professor of civil law and corporate governance at the University of Curaçao. During the course these two experts discussed different current subjects within property law, including the recent developments in the field of professional liability, the duty of care of banks, and the cases of power of attorney and representation.

According to Frank Kunneman, the course was very well received: “The attendants were very enthusiastic and actively participated in the course. They indicated afterwards that this initiative had much added value for them, because they could gather a lot of advanced specialist knowledge in a relatively short amount of time. That is exactly what we wanted to achieve with this course, so naturally we are pleased to hear that.” At the request of the participants this initiative of offering postgraduate education to lawyers in St. Maarten will be continued.
