Opening cancer prevention center soon
“Fundashon Prevenshon” (Foundation Prevention) will open the doors of the Screening Center for Cancer at Klipstraat in Otrobanda on May 24.
Vice-Chairman and also Treasurer of the foundation, Lionel “Lio” Capriles, reports in a letter to the media. “With this center we want to contribute to the welfare of the Curaçao community regarding the fight against cancer.”
The foundation was established with the purpose of coordinating and conducting examinations for the population with a view to detecting cancer in an early stage. In testing for cancer types that are most common on the island, the female part of the population will go first. “At a later time, the male part will also have its turn,” according to Capriles.
It has been scientifically proven – he continues his argument – that if cancer is detected early, much grief and unnecessary, uncomfortable situations the disease entails can be prevented. “Valuable lives can also often be saved.”
Various people and organizations – local and international – which offered the necessary assistance and finances are to thank for it that Curaçao, as most developed countries, can now dispose of its own “Screening Center for Cancer”. The foundation is non-profit and works with limited means.
Because the system of an examination for the population is entirely new to Curaçao, it is of major importance that everyone is well-informed from the start. This also increases the value of the call to cooperate for people when it is their turn for the screening. This requires an extensive media campaign. However, this is “terribly expensive”, according to Capriles, but still very necessary. Consequently, the media are requested to provide free space and broadcasting time.
“We are certain that we can all be proud to cooperate in creating a healthier Curaçao with fewer cases of cancer in the future,” Capriles concludes on behalf of Fundashon Prevenshon. Chairman of the foundation is Herbert “Bob” Pinedo. The other board members are: Elias Jeffrey Gerth in California, Ashley Duits, Douglas Pinedo, Randolph Statius Van Eps, and Linda Verbrugge Neuman.
