Dutch law firm Van Doorne wins Sonja Boekman Prize
The jury selected Van Doorne as the winner from 7 nominated parties. The prize is a joint initiative of OSR Legal Training and the Dutch Bar. The prize was awarded at the annual convention of the Netherlands Bar Association to two female partners of Van Doorne, Eva Schutte, charged with diversity, and Els de Wind.
The attention for more female talent is anchored in the Van Doorne organization. Long before gender diversity became an issue in corporate services, Van Doorne already distinguished itself positively compared to other law firms by the large number of female partners. Gender diversity is business as usual to Van Doorne; a study shows that a diversely composed firm provides a better profit. In 2006, Van Doorne, as one of the first corporate service providers, published a recruitment advertisement with the title “Part-time op scherp”. In 2008, the Charter “Talent naar de Top” (more women at the top) was signed with conviction. The support of these initiatives characterizes Van Doorne as a modern and dynamic employer.
Over 27 percent of the top at Van Doorne consists of women, in the sub-top this percentage is even almost 55. The jury is very enthusiastic about the results of Van Doorne: the proven diversity policy of Van Doorne and the anchoring of this policy in the organization was the deciding factor for the jury. Five years ago, the number of women at the top was already higher than average in the legal profession with Van Doorne. Since then, this number has only increased. However, Van Doorne wishes to achieve more result. With the appointment of a diversity partner and the start of awareness trainings this has to be achieved.
Onno Broerstra and Hetty Fenton, who form the management team of Van Doorne, are very proud of this result. Fenton: “We are proud that our diversity policy that has been implemented for quite some time is awarded this prize.”
The Sonja Boekman Prize has been named after a woman who has been very significant to law in the Netherlands. Sonja Boekman fulfilled many positions in the Bar Association. In 1977 she became the first female dean of the Haarlem Bar. Sonja Boekman was a judge in the Supreme Court.
