The capital of the Aruba Growth Fund will be invested in share capital, so not in loans, of Aruban companies in the next seven years.

WILLEMSTAD — The names and the stone strip edge of the curved wall of the Shaarei Tzedek Synagogue must be removed within two months. The Court ruled this in an appeal to a higher court. AOB Architects from Jacques Smeulders had instituted the legal proceedings. A case that had been going on for over seven years now appears to end with this judgment – unless the association Shaarei Tzedek, the community of Asjkenans Jews appeals to the Supreme Court.

WILLEMSTAD - Since January 1, 2012, Curaçao has had a new entity, the Trust. Lawyer Sabine Altena of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and tax consultant Arthur van Aalst of Baker Tilly Curaçao gave a seminar at various large trust offices on the civil and fiscal aspects of the Curaçao Trust. The smaller trust offices were invited alternately at the offices of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and Baker Tilly Curaçao.

POINTE BLANCHE--St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies through its agency AIC has completed a bond loan of US $110 million successfully, according to the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten (CBCS). A total of $150 million is needed, of which $80 million is to refinance the existing loan for the expansion of the cruise facilities and the rest is for the proposed causeway across Simpson Bay Lagoon, pier repairs and supplementary provisions.

The Sonesta Great Bay was this past Friday, 10 February, venue for the Real Estate Association St. Maarten (RAM) first annual meeting.  The meeting opened with a recap of the first year of this young association and was followed by the ambitions plans RAM has for the coming year of 2012. RAM president, Arun Jagtiani then introduced the attorneys of the recently landed commercial law firm, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.

Last Saturday, February 12, the “Universitaire Scriptieprijs” (University Thesis Prize) was awarded in Leiden for the best thesis of the year 2010-2011. The prize was won by Dirk Ormel. He could not accept the prize himself, because he was employed with VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in the Dutch Caribbean on February 1.

Growing numbers of ship arrests globally have revealed a potentially huge problemfor tramp owners. “There has been a significant rise in ship arrests in recent months,” said DLA Piper lawyer Carsten Grau. “This could be explained by the economic crisis in general, and in particular by depressed financing arrangements, and by a decreasing paymentmorale.”
