With the admittance to the bar of junior associate Vincent Abbing and the employment of associate Godelieve Wesselingh, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has expanded with both a starting and an experienced attorney. Vincent Abbing was sworn in by the Common Court of Justice of Curaçao, Aruba, and St. Maarten and of Bonaire, Statia, and Saba on Tuesday 9 September 2014. Godelieve Wesselingh has approximately six years of experience with one of the major international firms in the Netherlands and now makes the move to the Dutch Caribbean. She will be sworn in later.

Stakeholders in the Curacao Free Zones recently participated in a training to raise awareness of enforcement of intellectual property and brand recognition. The training was provided by Curinde, facilitator of the Curaçao Free Zones, thanks to the support of the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition (IACC). Carine Jänsch, Miriam den Boogert and Nathalie Tackling of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne participated in the training and each received a certificate. The training was a follow-up to the memorandum of understanding between Curinde and the IACC, signed last May in Hong Kong. Frank Kunneman of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, legal counsel to Curinde, is a member to this committee and attended the signing session of the memorandum in Hong Kong.

As of 1 October 2014 law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has a new executive committee. New members are Focco Lunsingh Scheurleer (managing partner) and Mayesi Hammoud. Along with current chief financial officer Esther Jansen the trio will be leading the organization with seventy employees in five locations.

The draft composition that has been proposed by Tierra del Sol to settle its debts and to prevent a bankruptcy, has been approved by a large majority of the creditors. The plan was accepted during the creditors’ meeting, which was held on Tuesday 19 August 2014.

With the presentation of the annual report to the government as the only shareholder, Bonaire Holding Maatschappij (BHM) has closed the past calendar year. In the report, 2013 is evaluated as a year with many developments. An example is the long term corporate governance program that was initiated, in which VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne is involved as legal advisor.

On Friday 25 July the LBS Bankruptcy Trustees - Michiel R.B. Gorsira and Robert F. van Beemen - have lodged the List of Third Interim Distributions (derde tussentijdse uitdelingslijst) at the Courthouse at the Wilhelminaplein 4 in Curacao, which list has been approved by the bankruptcy judge. The List of Third Interim Distributions is available for public inspection for ten (10) days. The available cash amount for the Third Interim Distribution is ANG 289.6 mln (USD 161.8 mln). The oil that polluted the Jan Kok nature reserve in 2012 originated from the Curacao Oil Terminal at Bullenbaai. The judge considers this to be proven for now, which became clear from the verdict that was done by the Court of First Instance on Monday 21 July. The plaintiffs and owners of the polluted area, “Stichting Monumentenzorg” (Foundation for the preservation of historic buildings and sites) and Sea Shore Properties NV, are represented by Rogier van den Heuvel of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.
