VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has two new junior associates. Aubrich Bakhuis and Rens Groen both joined the firm in July; Curacao native Aubrich started in the Litigation & Commercial section in the Curacao office and Rens started in the Corporate & Banking section in the St. Maarten office.

Law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne will get a new office building in St. Maarten. Managing partner Focco Lunsingh Scheurleer and senior partner Randolph van Eps signed an agreement to this effect with the Betonbouw Group on Friday 10 July. The new building will be at Harbour View, just like the current building. Higher up the slope, the building will offer magnificent views of Philipsburg, Great Bay and Great Salt Pond.

The VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne Thesis Prize of this year was won by Lydia Davelaar. The prize for the best graduation thesis from students at the Faculty of Law of the University of Curaçao was awarded by lawyer Rogier van den Heuvel on Monday, June 22.

With the swearing-in of lawyer Tessa Breugom on Thursday 11 June, the Bonaire team of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne now consists of six sworn lawyers. Tessa joined VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in November 2014, after she completed the “Zuidas” Corporate Law master’s degree program at the VU University in Amsterdam. Tessa started in the litigation practice of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.

The construction of Hospital Nobo Otrobanda (HNO), the new hospital in Curacao, may continue. That is what the court decided on Friday 19 June, after the construction was delayed due to the lawsuit filed by three organisations that were against the demolition of the some of the current buildings on site. Frank Kunneman and Tom Peeters of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne advised SONA (the Netherlands Antilles Development Foundation) in the complex procedure.

Throughout the year, law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne donates reading books to elementary schools on islands where it has branches. After donations in Aruba and Curacao, the Marie Genevieve DeWeever public primary school in St. Maarten was donated books the school had selected on Friday 29 May.

Co-trustee in the Lehman bankruptcy Robert van Beemen was interviewed by Dutch news radiostation BNR Nieuwsradio (BNR News Radio) on 19 May. He discussed the complexity and scope of the bankruptcy, explaining – among other issues – how the team had to gather information and documents from London to New York. Curacao Airport Partners (CAP) has vindicated in the appeal that the company instituted against eleven car rental companies. CAP took this step in order to secure that only car rentals that were granted a concession by CAP earlier, will have unlimited access to Hato Airport in Curacao in order to bring and pick up clients to and from the airport. CAP was represented by attorney Rogier van den Heuvel of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.
