On Monday 2 June, the report Maritime Future of Aruba was presented to Minister Otmar Oduber of Tourism, Transport, Primary Sector and Culture of Aruba. The objective of this report is to create a more competitive operation for Aruba in the international maritime industry. Catching up on the law and regulations was mentioned as one of the prior conditions to achieve this goal. Lawyer Kimberley de l’Isle of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne  gave a presentation on the benefits of a good treaty network in this regard.

Hungarian listed pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter has purchased an initial majority stake in Mediplus NV, based in Curacao. This is reported by Dutch Caribbean newspaper Amigoe (clipping in Dutch) and the Wall Street Journal. A corporate team of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne assisted Gedeon Richter in this acquisition.

The bankruptcy trustees of Lehman Brothers Securities N.V. - Michiel R.B. Gorsira and Robert F. van Beemen of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne – recently entered into (i) a distribution agreement with Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.; and (ii) a deed of settlement with Lehman Brothers International (Europe). The special part is that a connection to the Dutch Caribbean islands or region is a requirement for graduates and an advantage for the more experienced lawyers that the firm is looking for. In the campaign ‘A Lawyer in the Caribbean’, the firm shows the target audience what the legal profession encompasses in the Dutch Caribbean.

Daniëlla Engelhardt, admitted to the Sint Maarten bar on 28 March 2014, is the newest addition to VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne’s expanding St. Maarten team. Daniëlla grew up in Curacao and started her legal studies in the Netherlands in 2007. She had a clear goal: to return home to the Caribbean, and work at an internationally oriented law firm. Her drive was unmistakable throughout her studies, when she, amongst other things, interned at a Curacao law firm, worked as a paralegal at a Dutch law firm and clerked at the Haarlem Court.

The country of St. Maarten and the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP) have signed an agreement for the execution of trademark legislation in St. Maarten. As per 1 January 2015, BBIE will introduce a new procedure for trademark registration with validity in St. Maarten. This will facilitate online submission of trademarks, which will result in a faster completion of the registration procedure. The trademark register itself will be accessible online. Miriam den Boogert, IP attorney at VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne: “This agreement means a huge step forward in the efficiency of trademark registrations. Our experience with BBIE regarding trademark registrations on Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba is excellent. On behalf of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, Tom Peeters and Sophie van Lint have responded to information from the Public Body of Bonaire regarding long lease, and adjustment and enforced collection thereof. A news article in Antilliaans Dagblad (Antillian Daily) suggested that the Bonaire local government is entitled to adjustment and enforced collection if the long lease isn’t paid in time. VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne is of the opinion that this information is incorrect. A response, explaining this view, has been published in local newspapers Antilliaans Dagblad (in Dutch) and Extra (in Papiamentu).
