The Government of Aruba has awarded the concession for the USD 100mln PPP Watty Vos Boulevard project to the company Mota-Engil. The appointment of Mota-Engil as preferred bidder took place end of July, and marked the transition to the Financial Close phase of the tender procedure. Last Tuesday, 22 September, Mota-Engil gave a press conference about the appointment. Senior associate and project development specialist Tom Peeters of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne assisted Mota-Engil throughout the whole process, which started in February 2014.

This week, the 20th Trade Mission about sustainable trading between the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Caribbean region and Latin America is taking place in Amsterdam. On Thursday 24 September, Frank Kunneman, senior partner at VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and lecturer civil law and corporate governance at the University of Curacao, will give a keynote speech titled “Out of control? Corporate Governance in the Dutch Caribbean.”

On Thursday 3 September 2015, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne organized a seminar free of charge for the NGO Platform Bonaire, about corporate governance. On behalf of the firm, keynote speakers were corporate governance experts Frank Kunneman and Robbert Kroon, and head of the Bonaire office Tom Peeters.

Throughout 2015, law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne donates reading books to various schools on the islands where the firm operates. After donations in Aruba, Curacao and St. Maarten, a package of books was handed over to Watapana School in Rincon, Bonaire on Friday 21 August at the start of the new school year.

Following the approval of the competition authorities on 3 August 2015, the Spanish hotel management company Barceló Group has closed its acquisition of Occidental Hotels Management (the holding company of Occidental Hotels & Resorts). The company already owned 42,5% of the shares since May 2015, but has now closed the transaction of the remaining 57,5% as well.

Republic Bank Limited, Trinidad & Tobago’s largest indigenous bank, has finalized its acquisition of RBC Royal Bank (Suriname) NV. The closing of the transaction took place in Trinidad on Friday 31 July. Republic Bank acquired RBC Royal Bank through the purchase of Royal Overseas Holdings (St. Lucia) Ltd at an estimated cost of USD 45.3 million. On behalf of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, a team led by partners Randolph van Eps and Molly Steward assisted Republic Bank in the acquisition.

VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has two new junior associates. Aubrich Bakhuis and Rens Groen both joined the firm in July; Curacao native Aubrich started in the Litigation & Commercial section in the Curacao office and Rens started in the Corporate & Banking section in the St. Maarten office.
