Aubrich Bakhuis yesterday explained the Heads of Agreement that were negotiated with Guangdong Zhenrong Energy regarding the exploitation of the Isla refinery on Curaçao, at local radio station Paradise FM. The Chinese energy company will be leasing and operating the oil refinery as from 2019. Aubrich is attorney at law at VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, and is a member of the multi-disciplinary project team that has been advising the government on the future of the refinery since 2013. With the first walk-in office hours on Wednesday 19 October, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has launched a new concept: Legal spot. A support program for startups, with free legal advice via monthly office hours. For this purpose, the firm started a cooperation with Workspot Curaçao. Workspot offers dynamic, inspiring and affordable workplaces to freelancers and starting entrepreneurs. At these office locations, startups can look for cooperation and learn from each other.

On occasion of its 10th anniversary, the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation has launched the #WhyProBono social media campaign. Lex Mundi and its member firms aim to raise the awareness of pro bono work, and to encourage volunteerism globally. VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne supports this cause by showing how our lawyers contribute to the local communities and the development of the islands on which we operate.

On Wednesday 5 October 2016, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne organized a seminar on the announced National Ordinance Optimization Governmental Entities. This ordinance concerns both the so-called state-owned corporations as well as foundations and associations financed with governmental funds. The seminar got an extra dimension, as the government postponed the presentation of this Ordinance to the Governor as a result of the national strike in Curaçao. Over 50 participants were informed on the consequences of the Ordinance for their organizations by Frank Kunneman and Tom Peeters, partners at VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne. Time was also reserved to share and discuss preferable and possible modifications to the Ordinance.

With associate Daan Jacobs taking the oath on 4 October 2016, the Curaçao team of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne adds the fourth new lawyer to their team this year. Daan has five years of experience as a lawyer and focuses on litigation. He advises and assists in for instance contractual, corporate and real estate (liability) issues.

On Wednesday 21 September, the court has rejected the claim of Aruba Birdlife Conservation (ABC) to stop the construction works of the Azure Condominiums project at the Bulbaliplas in Aruba. Consequently, property developer PGM Condobuilders is allowed to continue the construction of the Azure Condominiums project. In this proceedings, the government of Aruba successfully joined and put up a defence with PGM Condobuilders. The government was assisted by senior associate Steffen Hagen and associate Brechtje Huiskes of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.

As reported widely in the regional Dutch Caribbean media, various summary proceedings took place yesterday (Thursday 15 September) in light of the protests and strikes organized by the various labor unions in Curaçao. On behalf of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, Kimberley de l’Isle and Mayesi Hammoud represented union SGTK in two different summary proceedings.

On Thursday 7 September 2016, the VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne Thesis Award was presented on Aruba. This year’s winner was Stacey Kransen. The prize, a check and a certificate, was presented to her during a special Thesis Award Night at the University of Aruba. With this annual prize, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne awards the author of the best master thesis at the Faculty of Law of this university.

Recently, the first editions of the handbooks ‘Community Trade Mark Regulation’ and ‘Community Design Regulation’ have been published. Both handbooks provide a detailed article-by-article commentary on the Community trade mark regulation and the Community design regulation and their enforcement in each member state of the European Union. Attorney at law Steffen Hagen contributed to both books, including with a chapter on Intellectual Property litigation in the Netherlands.
