On Saturday 31 January, partner and employment law specialist Molly Steward will address medical practitioners, employers and legal staff about the legal aspects of the position of the employer in labor disputes. In the view of the public, the employee is still given the role of the victim, while the employer supposedly would be able to act as he wishes. During her lecture, Molly will discuss whether this view is still accurate in the reality of 2015, whether the balance in the legal position of employer and employee is a healthy one, and whether or not any measures are necessary.

The first Aruban Day of the Supervisory Board, which took place on 22 January 2015, was a successful launch edition. This annual seminar has been organized by VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne on Curacao for a number of years now, and the firm also introduced the concept on Bonaire recently. During the recent holiday season, law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne organized a Ban Topa networking reception for (prospective) law students and young professionals. The reception was attended by local students and professionals, as well as visitors from the Netherlands with roots in the Caribbean, who were back in Curacao for the holidays. Pre-university students, who will enroll in law school after their exams, also attended to ask students and professionals about their experiences.

The development of a solar park by Water- en Energiebedrijf Bonaire (WEB) has entered a new phase. Early January, the field with panels was connected to the distribution network on Bonaire. On behalf of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, senior associate Tom Peeters and junior associate Lotte Dunnink advise WEB about the development, the permits and the procurement process for this solar park.

In the context of the new year, law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne donates packages of reading books to elementary schools on the Dutch Caribbean islands where the firm has offices. The first donation was made recently to Scol Paso Pa Futuro in Aruba; a school for children with a learning disability.

VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has recently advised the Caribbean branch of RBC Merchant Bank regarding the loan of USD 59 mln that RBC has provided to Setar, the Aruban telecom company. RBC and Setar agreed on the loan on 30 September 2014 already, but did not announce this until mid November. This was reported by Antilliaans Dagblad (Antillian Daily) on 14 November.

VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has donated 69 Christmas presents for the ‘A Christmas present for every child’ charity initiative of Dolfijn.fm; the radio station in Curacao. Interns Gaia Bor and Vilijam Georgiev brought the presents to the radio station on Friday 19 December and explained why VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne was happy to contribute to the initiative.

VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has closed the year on Bonaire by lighting a traditional pagara (fireworks). This tradition on the islands of the Dutch Caribbean is meant to enhance prosperity in the upcoming year. Newspaper Extra reported on the pagara, which you can read here (clipping in Papiamentu).

On Thursday 20 November, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne organized the annual Day of the Supervisory Board on Curacao. This year, the central theme was the remuneration of supervisors, and finding the right balance in that regard. Managing partner Focco Lunsingh Scheurleer moderated the seminar, and speakers included Frank Kunneman, Kimberley de l ‘Isle, Robbert Kroon and Wendell Meriaan (Tax Partner KPMG).
