WILLEMSTAD-On January 1, 2012, thirteen state ordinances have taken effect for Curaçao, with which a second phase in the project to introduce a new Civil Code in Curaçao has been completed. The first phase of this project, when eighteen state ordinances took effect for - at the time - the Netherlands Antilles, had already been completed in 2001. The thirteen state ordinances concern all eight books of the Civil Code.

KRALENDIJK – The annual Rotarally of Rotary Club Bonaire will take place on Sunday, May 27. The event would actually already have taken place on Sunday, May 6, but was postponed due to unforeseen and unexpected circumstances surrounding the permit. The start will be at the sports hall at 9:00 a.m. and the finish is at Te Amo Beach.

WILLEMSTAD-Last Tuesday, April 24, Curaçao International Financial Services Association (CIFA) and the Curaçao Bar Association organized a successful seminar by the title: “Legal Developments for the Trust Sector: New Opportunities”. During the seminar, legal experts discussed the various amendments to the Civil Code, including the Curaçao Trust.

WILLEMSTAD — The dismissal of Cesar Prince as director of Fundashon Wega di Number Kòrsou, the institution that monitors the selling of lottery tickets, is apparently unreasonable. In this respect, the summary proceedings judge decided this morning to allow him an advance on compensation.It regards a net amount, says Prince’s lawyer, Molly Steward of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.

WILLEMSTAD – Minister of Infrastructure Charles Cooper (MAN) and Anthony de Lima of data center project Curaçao Technology Center (Ctex) pushed the spade in the ground in Mahuma this morning for the first stone of the complex to be laid. The local contractor “Dusron Bouwbedrijf” has become the principal contractor of the construction project, which is expected to be completed in early 2013.

ROTTERDAM – Three years and seven months after the downfall of Lehman Brothers, the trustees of the bankrupt American merchant bank make their first payment to the creditors today. This is confirmed by two Dutch lawyers who are involved in the largest bankruptcy in history as trustees of former subsidiaries of Lehman Brothers. The downfall of the bank was the prelude to the worldwide financial crisis in 2008.
