The Curacao utility company Aqualectra, represented by Mayesi Hammoud of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, has vindicated in summary proceedings it started against the World Trade Center in Curacao. The summary proceedings were started by Aqualectra to ensure payment of the debt of millions of guilders WTC has with Aqualectra. The Court ruled in favor of Aqualectra on Tuesday 21 April.

The Antillean Lawyers Association (Antilliaanse Juristen Vereniging) has appointed the board for the year 2015-2016 in a General Membership Meeting. Willemieke Princée of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has been appointed as new member in the board, consisting of eight legal professionals.

Multinational telecom company Cable and Wireless Communications (CWC) has acquired Columbus International Inc. for USD 1.85bln. CWC is active in 16 Caribbean and Latin American countries; Columbus is active in seven countries with the brand names Flow and Karib Cable. Natasha Joubert and Carine Jänsch of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne advised regarding the Curacao and Bonaire regulatory aspects of this acquisition.

Last week, Cinemark has signed the lease with the new to open shopping center Sambil in Curacao. With this signing, Sambil is now ensured of the opening of a Cinemark movie theatre in the new shopping mall, which will open its doors in May 2015. Cinemark operates the third largest circuit of the United States. On behalf of the legal team of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, Godelieve Wesselingh attended the closing.

In the 2015 edition of the Chambers Global
law firm ranking, which was launched on 12 March 2015, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has been placed in the highest category for the fifth consecutive year. Moreover, with five individual ranked lawyers the firm performs significantly better than other firms in the region. Steffen Hagen, who recently joined the firm, is a new addition to the four ranked lawyers the firm already had in the past years. VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne is the only law firm to provide more than one ranked lawyer in the Dutch Caribbean edition of Chambers Global 2015.

The Kluwer (a Dutch legal publisher) Maritime Law Handbook offers a country-by-country overview of arrest of vessels, enforced sale of vessels, registration of vessels, and mortgage on vessels. The parts about Curacao en Aruba were recently added and were written by Mayesi Hammoud and Willemieke Princée on behalf of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, together with co-author and former firm member Freeke Kunst.

Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal, the legal website for the Dutch Caribbean, has launched its Top 10 Law Firms Suriname 2014. This year, foreign law firms with Suriname desks were included in a separate Top 5 as well. Van Doorne is the partner firm of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in the Netherlands. Van Doorne was founded in 1930 and comprises both lawyers as well als civil law notaries and tax advisers.

VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne expands its team with an additional junior associate. Raoul Profijt was recently sworn in by the Common Court of Justice of Curacao, Aruba and St. Maarten, and of Bonaire, Statia, and Saba. In 2014, Raoul finished his second Master’s and in September of the same year he joined the Curacao office of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.
