Last week, Cinemark has signed the lease with the new to open shopping center Sambil in Curacao. With this signing, Sambil is now ensured of the opening of a Cinemark movie theatre in the new shopping mall, which will open its doors in May 2015. Cinemark operates the third largest circuit of the United States. On behalf of the legal team of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, Godelieve Wesselingh attended the closing.

In the 2015 edition of the Chambers Global law firm ranking, which was launched on 12 March 2015, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has been placed in the highest category for the fifth consecutive year. Moreover, with five individual ranked lawyers the firm performs significantly better than other firms in the region. Steffen Hagen, who recently joined the firm, is a new addition to the four ranked lawyers the firm already had in the past years. VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne is the only law firm to provide more than one ranked lawyer in the Dutch Caribbean edition of Chambers Global 2015.

The Kluwer (a Dutch legal publisher) Maritime Law Handbook offers a country-by-country overview of arrest of vessels, enforced sale of vessels, registration of vessels, and mortgage on vessels. The parts about Curacao en Aruba were recently added and were written by Mayesi Hammoud and Willemieke Princée on behalf of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, together with co-author and former firm member Freeke Kunst.

Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal, the legal website for the Dutch Caribbean, has launched its Top 10 Law Firms Suriname 2014. This year, foreign law firms with Suriname desks were included in a separate Top 5 as well. VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne is no. 1 in that Top 5, based on the total number of lawyers employed at the firm. Please find the complete article on the website of DCLP.

The international financial sector of Curacao has joined forces to organize a large conference on the important theme 'Curacao… The New Midshore Reality'. The organizers – CIFA, CIFC and STEP Curacao – have been working together for a long time to inform wealthy clients and families from Latin America and the rest of the world about the many possibilities Curacao has to offer. Sabine Altena of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne is fellow organizer of the conference, being a CIFA board member. Steffen Hagen will be speaking during the conference in a duo presentation with Helena Sprenger of Houthoff Buruma New York, about asset protection and migrating risks through bilaterial investment treaties (BITs).

In the overview of the Top 50 law firms in the Netherlands, which is published by the Dutch legal magazine Mr. annually, Van Doorne has climbed two positions compared to 2013. Van Doorne is the partner firm of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in the Netherlands. Van Doorne was founded in 1930 and comprises both lawyers as well als civil law notaries and tax advisers.

VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne expands its team with an additional junior associate. Raoul Profijt was recently sworn in by the Common Court of Justice of Curacao, Aruba and St. Maarten, and of Bonaire, Statia, and Saba. In 2014, Raoul finished his second Master’s and in September of the same year he joined the Curacao office of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.

On Saturday 31 January, partner and employment law specialist Molly Steward will address medical practitioners, employers and legal staff about the legal aspects of the position of the employer in labor disputes. In the view of the public, the employee is still given the role of the victim, while the employer supposedly would be able to act as he wishes. During her lecture, Molly will discuss whether this view is still accurate in the reality of 2015, whether the balance in the legal position of employer and employee is a healthy one, and whether or not any measures are necessary.

The first Aruban Day of the Supervisory Board, which took place on 22 January 2015, was a successful launch edition. This annual seminar has been organized by VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne on Curacao for a number of years now, and the firm also introduced the concept on Bonaire recently. During the recent holiday season, law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne organized a Ban Topa networking reception for (prospective) law students and young professionals. The reception was attended by local students and professionals, as well as visitors from the Netherlands with roots in the Caribbean, who were back in Curacao for the holidays. Pre-university students, who will enroll in law school after their exams, also attended to ask students and professionals about their experiences.
