On 1 January 2016, attorney at law Thies Leijsen was appointed dean of the Bar Association in Bonaire. He succeeds Anneke van Toll (LLM), who filled the position of dean for more than 6 years. Thies Leijsen is employed by law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and is a member of the Antillean Jurist Association and of the Supervisory Board for lawyers for the BES islands. Earlier in his career, Thies was an active member of the Bar Association in St. Maarten, where he was chairman of the activities committee.

The Foundation Pension Fund Vidanova recently acquired two-thirds of the shares of SFT Bank. VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne assisted Vidanova in this acquisition.

After the Netherlands and Curaçao, Bonaire now also has its own Foundation Ride for the Roses. The foundation was established on 7 January 2016. Its purpose is to raise funds for the battle against cancer by organizing sports events. Together with seven other enthusiastic directors, Tom Peeters initiated the formation of this foundation. Tom is attorney and manager of the Bonaire office of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.

‘Stichting Monumentenzorg’ (Foundation for the preservation of historic buildings and sites) and Sea Shore Properties have resumed the legal proceedings against the Isla-refinery, regarding the oil spill in 2012 at Jan Kok, as the parties haven’t been able to reach a settlement. The plaintiffs, represented by Rogier van Heuvel of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, and the refinery negotiated for more than a year.

On Monday 21 December 2015 VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne organized the second edition of the Ban Topa networking reception. At our Curaçao office we welcomed law students and young professionals with Caribbean roots or affinity, living in the Netherlands or the Caribbean. Pre-university students, who will enroll in law school after their exams, were also invited. In this way, it was possible for all attendants to ask each other and the attorneys of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne about their experiences.

With Brenda Stuart taking the oath earlier this month VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne has added nine new lawyers to its team this year. In September 2015, Brenda joined the Curaçao office of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne as a junior associate.

The drilling rig Deepsea Metro II, that is anchored in Curacao waters, will be judicially sold by public auction. Partner and maritime law expert Mayesi Hammoud assists the executing party, DVB Bank America NV, in the judicial sale. The Court of First Instance of Curacao has granted an order for the auction to take place on 1 February 2016.

On Thursday 26 November, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and The Galan Group organized the annual Day of the Supervisory Board in Curaçao. During this meeting in the auditorium of the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten, they looked back at ten years of Civil Code Book 2. In addition, four experts discussed the need, bottlenecks and future of supervision on financial institutions in the Dutch Caribbean during a discussion round with the participants.

After three lawyers in Curaçao and one in St. Maarten already took the oath in November, the Aruba team of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne expanded as well. Starting attorney Gregory Maldonado and experienced attorney Steffen Hagen were sworn in last week by the Joint Court of Justice of Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten and of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. A special moment, as it does not happen often that a junior associate is sworn in simultaneously with his supervisor.
