Partner Focco Lunsingh Scheurleer and associate Shalini Sadal of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne recently contributed to a multi-jurisdictional guide on investment funds, compiled by Practical Law Global (PLG). The guide gives a summary of the current laws and regulations in Curaçao for retail funds and hedge funds. The Curaçao section was already compiled by the team of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in 2015, but has been updated for the new volume.

A special employment law seminar last Monday, 25 April, at law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne: by video conference, prof. Stefan Sagel addressed lawyers and clients on four islands – Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, and St. Maarten – simultaneously. Sagel, professor employment law at the University of Leiden and partner with De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, updated the attendants on the four islands on current developments in employment law.

Five new lawyers have joined VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne since the beginning of this year already. Junior associates Sixiènne Janssen, Carlos Winkel and Navid Zahedi started at the office in Curaçao. There, they were accompanied by experienced lawyer Daan Jacobs, who joined from the Dutch office Nauta Dutilh. Junior associate  Lorena Navia is the newest member of the team of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in Bonaire.

After the second sold-out edition on 31 March and a total of 200 participants in the Dia di Fundashon, the organizers VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and The Galan Group consider the introduction of this new corporate governance event a success. Participants’ response indicates that the concept meets a need for broad training, which was not met earlier.

Yesterday (Tuesday 29 March), Rogier van den Heuvel of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne represented the country government of Curaçao in a hearing of the Council of State of the Dutch Kingdom. The hearing was part of the appeal procedure that was filed by the country of Curaçao against the prolonging of the Kingdom act on financial supervision.

On Monday 21 March, the Court in Curaçao ruled in favor of telecom provider UTS in the case the state-owned company had instituted against the Curaçao Court of Audit (Algemene Rekenkamer Curacao or ARC) and the government. The ARC had been instructed by Parliament via a motion, to audit the regularity and efficiency of the policy in the state-owned company. UTS objected to this and was assisted by partners Frank Kunneman and Mayesi Hammoud of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in the shortened proceedings on the merits.

The drilling rig Deepsea Metro II was auctioned and sold for USD 210mln on 15 March. The vessel was anchored in Curacao waters. The Court of First Instance of Curacao granted the order for the auction at the request of the executing party, DVB Bank America NV. DVB was assisted by partner and maritime law expert Mayesi Hammoud.

On 1 January 2016, attorney at law Thies Leijsen was appointed dean of the Bar Association in Bonaire. He succeeds Anneke van Toll (LLM), who filled the position of dean for more than 6 years. Thies Leijsen is employed by law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and is a member of the Antillean Jurist Association and of the Supervisory Board for lawyers for the BES islands. Earlier in his career, Thies was an active member of the Bar Association in St. Maarten, where he was chairman of the activities committee.
