The Day of the Supervisory Board has become a tradition in Curaçao. On Thursday 26 November 2015,  VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and The Galan Group organize another edition in the auditorium of the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten. During the first part of the day, book 2 of our new Civil Code will be reviewed. Prof. mr. Peter van Schilfgaarde (see inset) will be the keynote speaker on that topic.

Five years ago the Code Corporate Governance was introduced in the then Netherlands Antilles community. The purpose of this Code was to help the government regain the confidence of society in state-owned companies and foundations, and to increase the quality and integrity of the management of these institutions. During the Day of the Supervisory Board on Tuesday 17 November 2015, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, Bonaire Holding Maatschappij and The Galan Group evaluated the current situation regarding this topic in Bonaire.

On Thursday 12 November, law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and tax consultancy firm Baker Tilly St. Maarten organized a seminar called ‘A Solid Local Foundation’. Tax advisors Maarten Tervoort and Arthur van Aalst and attorneys at law Focco Lunsingh Scheurleer and Kamla Besançon informed the participants about the various options in St. Maarten for estate planning, asset protection and fiscal optimization for local entrepreneurs and family businesses.

No less than four lawyers of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne have been sworn in this month by the Joint Court of Justice of Aruba, Curaçao, Aruba, St. Maarten and of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba: starting attorneys Rens Groen and Tiffany de Palm, experienced lawyer Aubrich Bakhuis and experienced attorney at law Roderik van Hees. Rens started in July 2015 at VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in St. Maarten and was consequently sworn in there. The other three lawyers are based at the Curaçao office and were sworn in there.

The public side of property law was the central theme in a seminar that was organized by the real estate team of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne on 5 November 2015. Among the participants were developers, architects, real estate agents and representatives from the construction, energy sector and healthcare sectors. During the seminar, the speakers discussed existing and new rules regarding spatial planning, the environment, nature, water, and construction, and their application in practice.

From 23 to 25 September 2015, the 20th Trade Mission about sustainable trading between the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Caribbean region and Latin America took place in Amsterdam. Frank Kunneman, senior partner at VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and lecturer civil law and corporate governance at the University of Curacao, gave a keynote speech titled “Out of control? Corporate Governance in the Dutch Caribbean during this conference.
